Help for DarfurWe're all trying to do what we can to help the world. Encouraged by his two daughters, Mbali and Daliswa, Bakithi has written and produced a song on his forthcoming CD Change, called 'Help For Darfur' FACTS ABOUT THE CRISIS IN DARFUR
•The United Nations has called the situation in Darfur the worst humanitarian crisis in the world today. •In February 2003, a Government-sponsored Arab militia, Janjaweed, began attacks (including rape, murder, torture) on residents and other groups in the Darfur region of Sudan. •The conflict is between two different ethnic groups: Arabs (Janjaweed) and Non-Arabs/Black Africans (rebel groups, the two largest are the Sudan Liberation Army and Justice and Equality Movement), which accused the government of discriminating against non-Arabs. •In May 2006, the Government and major rebel groups signed a peace agreement, but the conflict is not over. The agreement has not been honored, as fighting continues in the region. •It is estimated that almost 500,000 people are dead, 2.5 million people have been displaced from their homes, and 4 million people are starving as a result of the Darfur conflict. •For the many refugees from the conflict, the situation is getting worse. A UN agency announced in April that it would have to cut refugees’ food rations in half, and that they only have 32% of the money they would need to provide an adequate food supply). The refugee camps also lack adequate medical supplies and sanitation. •Efforts by the UN to end the violence have failed. |
